History

In 2000 FotoTriennale.dk had its début under the name "Odense Foto Triennale" initiated by Museet for Fotokunst in Odense. Since then it has lived up to its name with at festival every third year. The different editions of the festival have always had an overall theme setting a common tone for the many exhibition venues. The theme has also been the breeding ground for reflection and debate of current issues.

FotoTriennale.dk is a member of The Festival of Light - an international cooperation that involves 23 photo festivals from more than 20 countries around the world - and Photo Festival Union - an international union of European photo festivals.


Themes for FotoTriennale.dk:


2000

The first edition of the festival was accomplished in cooperation with museums and galleries all over Denmark. With the theme Slowness the hectic modern way of life was confronted/contrasted with other ways of living.


2003

In 2003 the festival directors decided to make it a special Funen event, hence its subtitle "The Funen Festival of Photography". Since then it has involved museums and galleries in all of the coastal cities of the island Funen as well as the town Ringe. This year´s theme was Group View, and the different exhibitions shed light on the conflict between the individual and the group.


2006

In 2006 the festival had a total of 35 exhibitions with photographers from Denmark, Sweden, England, Russia, Austria, Germany, Finland, USA, Australia, Mexico and Brazil.
The festival theme was Food and exhibitions showed all aspects of food from production to preparation and consumption to its effect in the form of obese or anorectic children and adults – not to mention the calligraphic end product.


2009

In 2009, the festival was renamed FotoTriennale.dk, which at the same time became the festival´s domain name on the internet. The fourth photo triennial focused on the theme Landscape. 30 photographers and 12 exhibition venues presented landscape photography in many different ways; urban landscape, the industrial and agricultural landscape, as virgin nature, as destroyed nature, as geological phenomena and much more. The triennial thus contributed to the important discussion of what we do to the surrounding nature and what that in turn does to us.
